CHÃNAN - What it means...
We have been asked on numerous occasions how the name Chanan Estates came about. Many presume Chanan stems from the last name of the late Mr Gilbert Chan, President of the Developer, Sun Diamond, Inc. Actually, the subdivision was named after Mercy, the only daughter of Cindy and Gilbert Chan. It was one day while Gilbert was doing a biblical study of Psalm 51 that he noticed the Hebrew word chanan, which means mercy as well as favor. He thought it most appropriate not only to use it for the whole subdivision but also for all its streets, which are prefixed with a Chan, giving the area a distinctive identity.
Why Mercy? It happened nearly twenty years ago about four months before Mercy was born. Cindy had a bad fall at the stairs in her office in Arcadia, CA and was admitted to Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital, Los Angeles. When Gilbert arrived, he was shocked to see the baby's rapid and erratic heartbeat on the monitor. To calm the baby in the womb, he started talking to the baby while stroking Cindy's stomach. To his amazement, the monitor showed within minutes that the baby's heartbeat was back to normal. They both felt God's mercy in sparing them deep sorrow and decided to name their daughter Mercy Glory.
When we look back these past twenty over years in Crestview, it is surely by the mercy of God that the vision for our development has come into full focus. The challenges were beyond our wildest expectations; exciting no doubt, but certainly not for the faint-hearted. With each passing year, we are ever mindful that without divine mercy we would not be here today. It is most apt to name the new subdivision after our daughter as the name constantly reminds us that in our unworthiness outside the biblical Eden, God continues to show tender mercies.
Our earnest desire is that all homeowners living in Chanan Estates shall also experience God's mercy and favor. We know deep within us that all good folks desire mercy no matter who they are or where they come from. In this exclusive residential community, may we also show mercy to one another. Since God desires mercy (Matthew 9:13) let us similarly show mercy to others as we receive His mercies afresh each new day. We count it a great blessing to live in Chanan Estates. It is God's reminder in a wonderful way that true love has the right to choose mercy (Romans 9:15).
“The quality of mercy is not strained; It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven upon the place beneath. It is twice blest: It blesseth him that gives and him that takes." William Shakespeare.
